Gencon 2026 Recap: Pickup Games

I ran two pickup games at Gencon with my friends and played a couple games. My friends wanted to play His Majesty The Worm so I brought some spare character sheets to the convention and ran them through the same scenario from the ticketed event. Later we painted some Delta Green Agents using a Wargames Atlantic sprue I brought to the con, and I ran them through a Delta Green adventure at the airport.

HIS MAJESTY THE WORM: DAY OF THE NEWTS

As previously stated, Bartoc the Orc Fighter and his wife Mary the Human Alchemist went into the mysterious cave to find their mother Sherry. They ran into the newts in the sacrifice room with the big statue and drove them back in a furious melee, killing one and forcing the other two to detach their tails and escape. Mary made a potion of fire resistance from the newt squeezings and Bartoc tossed the corpse and tails in the statue's offering bowl and were rewarded with a single gold coin when it scoured them away with steam. They pursued the newts into the geothermal pools below the statue and got ambushed. Mary got shoved off a platform into boiling water but escaped with only minor burns. She and Bartoc chased the salamanders off with thrown objects. The newts fled up the ladder and pulled it up, dropping objects down and trapping the Guild in the steam pit. Mary had an Efreet potion to spare, and combined with the newt squeezings the couple were able to escape through the water inflow pipe.

The Guild crept through the fountain room to the combination dining room/torture chamber. They heard newts approaching from all sides and hid in one of the fungus pits. The newt shaman came in and berated the newt brute and newt grunts for their failure to capture the delicious adventurers. The shaman went behind a door while the other newts went back to storm the geothermal pools, unaware Bartoc and Mary had escaped. Mary's mask protected her from the soporific spores but the fungus in the pit numbed Bartoc's entire body, requiring his wife's assistance to haul him out. They shoved the table to block the door from the fountain room, just in time for the two tailless newts to return. The amphibians tried to climb over the table but were caught and tossed into the fungus pits by the Adventurers as they wormed through the confined space. Mary casually finished off the stunned beasts after they absorbed the fungus through their skin and stopped moving.

The Guild followed the glow of lava and smell of iron into the newt kitchen, where Sherry lounged naked in a cookpot and pretended to be boiled alive. The newt shaman stood with a rat in one hand and a dagger in the other.

"Fuck your mother"

he croaked out in vulgaric and stabbed the rodent. A wave of confusion passed over the Guild, failing to find purchase in Bartoc's iron armor but bamboozling Mary. The Alchemist stumbled around the room while the Fighter jumped across the lava channel and hacked at the newt. The mage fled with the other rat, swimming out through the lava channel in the floor and dodging Bartoc's thrown ax. Bartoc lifted his nude mother-in-law out of the boiling liquid while Mary looted the room. After a brief rest they set out for the exit.

Fed by the corpses in the pits, the fungus had already grown to fill the torture room. Bartoc covered his mouth with Elven silk stolen from the newt dining table, but Sherry was rendered insensate. She luxuriantly kneaded her toes as her son-in-law awkwardly picked her up. The Guild went through the unexplored door to a room with a cage and mechanisms. Sherry puked up the magic beads she used to maintain her elemental protection spell. Bartoc grabbed a magic scroll from inside the now-empty cage, a unicorn hide parchment that grew back when the animals used it as a chew toy.

The big newt came through the door and attacked the Guild. He leaped forward and battered them with big swings of his cleaving sword, and almost cut Mary's arm off. Her mother shouted a warning and Bartoc skewered the salamander before it could dismember his wife. The Alchemist smeared the brute's mucous all over Bartoc's weapon to grant him powers of greater dismemberment. The Guild returned to the dining room and found a bunch of fruit bats flopping around the room. The flying foxes smelled food but were stunned by the fungus, muzzles stained purple with spores. Mary's beast handling talents proved invaluable, she gathered the beasts and safely carried them out of the chamber like a mama bat carrying her young. The oversized chiropterans dangled from her arms as they recovered their faculties and the Guild returned to the cave of oversized salt crystals, avoiding traps on the way.

The newt shaman and five dinosaurs faced off with the Guild and their bats in the big salt cave. Mary released the beasts, who flapped around distracting the raptors while the team fought. The mage killed his other rat and hamstrung Mary, once again unable to curse Bartoc. The Orc slashed limbs off the raptors and drove the dinos back. They skirted around the Orc and tried to get Sherry, who was much less well armed and armored, but the Guild lifted her up into the access tunnel from the cage room where the monsters couldn't reach her. The Adventurers hacked away until the dinos broke, prompting the newt shaman to retreat and giving them a clear shot out of the cave.

The surviving raptors rallied and swarmed Bartoc as he covered the exit. They knocked him to the ground. Someone spoke an incantation and the passage collapsed on top of the dinos, just short of the Orc. Larry the Mage had returned from his errand along with his other daughter Tansy. She flirted with her sister's wife while her sister Mary fed her one surviving bat a mango, totally oblivious.

DELTA GREEN: THE TEN REGIONS OF THE NIGHT
That night Agents DEER (IRS CI) and WICK (Criminal) crept up to the death house in the cornfield outside Amarna, Illinois. They found the bodies with the organs removed and now they were going to get the people who killed them. The ground floor windows were papered over so no light came out. They went to the back door and found an old man asleep with a shotgun in the filthy but well organized kitchen. DEER took the scattergun without waking him and WICK followed her in. A couple argued in the adjacent dining room as they loaded an unconscious body onto the table. The wife hated drug addicts. The husband understood. He had to work with them too. The surgical tools made a sound like silverware when he poured them out onto the table. WICK and DEER came around the corner and shot both. The husband took a twelve gauge shotshell and a nine millimeter and died instantly. The wife ate a bullet and fell to the ground insensate.

The snail is filling in for DEER's mini, which we didn't have time to base

WICK held his gun on the wounded lady while DEER tossed the empty double barrel and zip tied the old guy. He babbled about the watery abyss and the wonderful dream he just had. She checked the husband (dead) and the fentanyl addict unconscious on the table (alive but nodded off) and went to ziptie the wife. The lady pretended to be an innocent victim, and when that didn't work she informed them that Apep lived and knifed DEER through the ribcage with a hidden blade, narrowly missing the heart. WICK shot the perpetrator while DEER gasped for air and fumbled for her first aid kit. She packed the wound and stopped the internal leakage, recovered her sidearm and heard a noise from further in the house. A child's voice, muffled, asking his mom what happened.

The Agents searched the house. A TV room with an extension cord leading to an ominous floor hatch. A staircase up to the second floor with a booby trapped shotgun on the wall, daring thieves to take it. A second floor bathroom with a heavy breaker switch and a jar of strange, clear liquid that didn't smell like anything the Agents recognized. A sound from the ground floor, interrupting their search for the missing child. They went back down and found the bodies of the married cultists missing. The old man ziptied to his chair grinned and foamed at the mouth, then expired. His body was punctured. Two large holes.

The Agents went back into the living room. They noted the bucket of pickling spices balanced over the front door, ready to fall on anyone who broke in. They opened the floor hatch to reveal a staircase carved with power tools. The space beneath was damp. Wet. The extension cord led to a trouble light covered in blue plastic. The slimy wet clay chamber under the house held a child, chained to the wall and writing an endless sequence of hieroglyphs with a stylus. He made upset sounds when the Agents entered, screaming for his deceased parents. If they hadn't heard him cry out they'd have believed him entirely nonverbal. The chain around his ankle led into a wall, attached to something embedded in the seeping clay. They went back upstairs to find power tools with which to cut the manacle.

The garage had a jackhammer, a working car and a disabled car. The guest bedroom held trophies taken from victims, undoubtedly trapped. The bathroom had a tub of pickling spices. The Agents returned to the living room and found the hatch open. A set of wet footprints led upstairs. There was a sucking sound.

WICK led the way with his sub gun at the ready, DEER backed him up with his pistol. The lights went out and DEER laid her flashlight across her weapon arm. A mummy stumbled out into the hall, sopping wet like it came from a brine lake at the bottom of the ocean. The Agents shot it and it stumbled forward to grasp WICK, draining his bioenergy. DEER threw it off him and another hail of gunfire spilled its pickled organs on the floor in a spray of seawater, slaying it. The viscera gave off a metallic, buttery smell.

The Agents completed their search of the second floor. The master bedroom had a shotgun and a large caliber revolver, both of which DEER secured. The last room was a child's bedroom, filled with disused toys purchased at thrift stores long ago. The only recent addition was a filing cabinet, covered with brine and enormous toothmarks. The Agents opened it easily and found a stash of synthetic opioids. They returned to the landing and found the mummy's body torn open, contents missing. Something went thump on the ground floor of the house.

The Agents returned to the dining room and caught an enormous snake with a flint head halfway through devouring the unfortunate drug addict kidnapped by the cultists. DEER aimed at the body to avoid hitting the mostly-swallowed victim and it exploded in a hail of gore and reeking fentanyl. They hauled the unconscious woman out of its throat, but couldn't resuscitate her. Though dead, the snake was still a threat. The severed head tried to bite WICK, narrowly missing the killer crook.

DEER grabbed the jackhammer and went into the basement to free the kid. The child was chained to a stone sarcophagus, extruded from the wall and slimy with wet clay. He wept when he saw the Agents, realizing that his parents and his snake were dead. Water seeped out of the walls, slowly filling the room. DEER tried to break the chain with the power tools while WICK made a lasso out of the extension cord, anticipating trouble. The kid stuck his hand in the way and the jackhammer sheared it clean off as the Federal Agent broke away the stone around the mounting bracket. She grabbed the freed, maimed child and tried to wade out of the room. The water rose to her waist and the clay slurped her feet. She struggled toward the stairs and went under. WICK lassoed her with the cord and hauled both her and the child free. They ascended the stairs and the trouble light winked, despite being unplugged. Not the blue light but the yellow light of day, illuminating the hidden places of the watery abyss. Then it went out and they escaped the death house, the child weakly beating on DEER's chest with his remaining hand.
